2009 Goals Revisited - 8 Months Left!

Posted by mallton on April 29th, 2009

I’m not sure if you realize this yet, but 4 months of 2009 are just about history. There are only 8 more months left in this year…scary, huh?

So, with this shocking information, let’s re-visit your goals for 2009 and stay on track. Here’s what to do:

1. Pull out your 2009 Goals and Review them.

Now’s the time to pull out your 4 month old goals and take a gander.

Notice anything different about them? Are there any goals accomplished? Are there any goals you forgot about…or shouldn’t be on the list any more?

It’s important for us to review our goals frequently. Things change. We change. And goals change. If we keep them up to date there is nothing stopping us from achieving them.

The biggest mistake most entrepreneurs make, however, is that they never look at their goals once they set them. Okay, may once…in December…just before they throw them out and set new ones…but that’s all.

Successful entrepreneurs review their goals and dreams constantly. Most successful entrepreneurs review their goals monthly and weekly at a minimum. Some, even, daily.

2. Rewrite ‘em with Victory and Next indications.

Once you’ve reviewed your goals it’s time to rewrite ‘em. I like to make two lists.

The first list is my Victory List. On this list, I capture all my victories from the original 2009 goal list. By doing so, I am able to see what I’ve done so far this year.

[Take a time out for a moment here. Read your Victory List and give yourself a reward...you deserve it!]

Next, I create my second list…my New 2009 Goals List (or my Next List). This list consists of all the goals I still want to achieve this year.

Again, some goals may have been forgotten. And some shouldn’t transfer to the new list because you’re not interested in achieving them anymore…which is perfectly alright.

3. Prioritize your 2009 Goals - get ‘er done!

The last thing you need to do is prioritize your NEW goals list. Remember, it’s nice to review and rewrite this list, but if you don’t prioritize your goals and take action, it’s all for naught.

Take your new list and put your goals in a logical order to finish. Here are some questions to keep in mind:

Which goals move me closer to my ideal life/situation? Which goals make me more money…which ones do faster? Which goals are going to be fun?

Re-visiting your goals will put things into perspective for you…especially now with the new economy upon us. Again, some will stay and some will go. Keep the goals you want to achieve in front of you as much as possible.

Celebrate all your victories and review this article again next month. Remember, successful entrepreneurs review their goals monthly at a minimum!

Why Does Understanding Attitude Critical To Your Success?

Posted by mallton on April 28th, 2009

Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re absolutely right. Henry Ford

Attitude is the key success factor and the foundation to your success.

What is attitude? Attitude is your way of thinking or behaving.

Your attitude towards people influences your behavior towards them. Your attitude affects your level of satisfaction with your life and with your job. Your attitude affects everyone who comes into contact with you.

Your attitude is reflected in your tone of voice, posture and facial expressions. Your attitude can affect your health. It is your attitude that will make the biggest difference in your life—particularly when it comes to what you want to be, to do or to have.

Your past and present are a result of your past attitude. However, your present attitude will determine your future. Right now, you are the author of your future.

Attitude is the “advance man” of our true selves. Its roots are inward, based on past experiences, but its fruit is outward. It is our best friend or our worst enemy. It is more honest and more consistent than our words. It is a thing that either draws people to us or repels them. It is never content until it is expressed.

Attitude is the librarian of our past, the speaker of our present, and the prophet of our future. Yet, your attitude is within whose control?

The greatest thing about attitude is that it is not fixed and it is 100 percent within your control. Your attitude is up to you, as is your future!

Your beliefs, based on past experiences and what you have let in from the outside world, determine your attitude. Your attitude will determine how you feel. How you feel determines the actions you take and the ultimate results that you get in life.

The first thing to do is to review your beliefs. You are now an adult and should be able to distinguish between fact and fiction—what do you really believe about you? What is real and what is not? Only you can change your beliefs.

How you see yourself, your self-worth, your self-esteem and your self-confidence is all part of your attitude. How you are perceived by others can influence your attitude, as it has in the past. That is external influence. If you accept that influence, whether it is positive or negative, you will let it affect you internally.

However, if you become aware of those external influences and decide to lead from within, you start to take control of your attitude.

Here are a few simple questions to help you improve your attitude:

How do you feel about your attitude based on a scale 1-10: 1 being poor and 10 being excellent?

Why did you rate yourself like that?

What must you do to be a 10?

Remember, your attitude in 100% within your control and you can make your attitude whatever you want.

More Strategies for Effortless Business Success

Posted by mallton on April 28th, 2009

You may have already my article “Strategies for Effortless Business Success” - with the emphasis on the word effortless. In this follow up article, I want to explore what I mean by success - because most “normal” people really haven’t got the first clue what the word actually means in the context of their everyday lives. Bear in mind, of course, that normal people are technically insane - their subconscious mind controls them - not the other way around.

Many people, when they first hear me say this, laugh at the notion - but, I can assure you, that it is no laughing matter, for it is the normal perspective on success that has brought the global banking system to the very brink of self-destruction. It is the normal definitions of success that has brought the auto industry to its knees, left ordinary people with unserviceable debt and made life so incredibly difficult for so many business people. So, before we go any further, let’s understand that normal definitions of success simply won’t do.

A couple of years back, I asked a large gathering at a Chamber of Commerce business breakfast, if they thought that making abnormal financial gains and achieving abnormal business growth would be a good definition of success. Considering many people to have achieved that level of “success”, many of the participants made the point that that kind of “success” often comes at a high price - whether it be family life, personal life or even health, many people “gain the whole world” and “lose their own soul”.

Unfortunately, normal definitions of success are both comparative and competitive. Businesses compare themselves to the competition. There was a time when large accountancy practices measured their success by comparing their employee numbers against those of their competitors - to the point that one such firm employed extra gardeners to put them into first place on what was a completely mis-constructed league table. Life assurance companies construct their version of success based on the amount of new business growth - regardless of whether their new business was profitable or not (or even sensible or not). And banks measure their relative success on the “size of their balance sheet” - like bold boys going around shouting that “mine is bigger than yours”!

We all know where comparative and competitive definitions of success get us. What appears to be common sense has actually turned out to be complete nonsense. For your business, you need to know what success means for you (just as you need to know what your version of personal success is). Can I be so bold as to suggest a framework definition of real business success?

“We excel at what we do - and we do it effortlessly. Each customer is valued as if they were the only one (because we simply never know who will be the most important customer to us in the long run). We get very well rewarded and make the kind of margins that others envy. We don’t regard what we do as work - it’s both fun and it allows us plenty of “work/life” balance. The team is more like family - there are no hidden agendas, everyone’s open - we hold back on nothing. We’re constantly open to change and the next big opportunity.”

Perhaps, you think that’s an ideal and that an ideal world simply does not exist. You would be wrong on both counts.

Over the years - including quite recently - I’ve worked with business teams whose outlook and ambitions closely mirror what I’ve written above. Such businesses are few and far between - which, I suppose, means that they are abnormal! But, if you don’t want to be normal in your personal life (because so-called “normal” people are technically insane!) why settle for normality in business? If psychological research proves that normal business teams are dysfunctional, why settle for a normal business team? The vast majority of businesses range from dysfunctional to mediocre - the more successful are simply a little less dysfunctional and mediocre than everyone else - why settle for that when you can achieve effortless business success?

I refer back to my first article in this series - where I gave you four simple ideas on how to create an effortlessly successful business strategy, where we talked about seeing, feeling, hearing, smelling and tasting the desired outcome. I suggest you adopt that approach. In doing so, the things you will experience as a result of your abnormal definition of success will need to be encapsulated in that desired outcome.

Goal Achievement The Easy Way

Posted by mallton on April 27th, 2009

Most of the population are visual people which makes the writing out of their goals in great detail a valuable exercise, it also clarifies things in their minds and can often lead to changes in the initial goal. Writing goals on paper is not a task it is great fun for not only does it crystalise the goal in your mind but you can vizualize the effect the achievement of the goal will have on your life making you even more determind to achieve it.

So many people blieve that goal setting only involves your professional goals when to get your life in perfect balance you need to devote as much time to setting social goals such as those for your family, your well-being and relaxation. It is so easy when you enjoy your work to steal a few more minutes here and there just to complete something, if you are not careful those minutes can become hours and sometimes the night light burns bright, but you really enjoy it, this is why social goals are vitally important to a balanced life style. Your family will support you but getting a work to life balance is essential for more than just keeping your relationship together.

What is the final part of goal setting that brings it all together - vizualization. Which is why you need to write your goals in great detail your vizualization becomes easier. Vizualization plays a major role in your goal achievement. Becuase you do not have at this precise moment the thing or experience that you want you have to vizualize what it will be like to achieve it. It is only if you have a solid image through vizualization of your goal that you will know where you want to end up how you are going to get there becomes easier the more solid the vision. Just try writing something down without seeing an image in your mind - it is impossible, that image clarifies what you wnat to write down as you describe it, if you can vizualize it and feel the benefits you will receive it is a goal. This is a vital step in goal achievement, remember you are after goal achievement not goal setting, get this bit right and you are over half way to making your dreams come true. Just look at your home and all the equipment you have in there, every piece began as a thought in the mind of its creator or designer, even your house itself. They did not come about because a genie in a lamp appeared one day in a puff of smoke.

There are so mnay little exercises you can do to prove that you use vizualization many times in your normal day-to-day activities. Of course you think in pictures, if I say the words cell phone to you; you do not see the words in your mind you see a picture of your cell phone. If you do not believe that you use vizualization just think of the last holiday you went on; you picked out the destination and immediately in seeing your destination in a brochure your mind was filled with images of a myriad of other things you would do while relaxing. When you read a book your imagination paints pictures of the scene that is being described. There is not a day goes by without you vizualizing something.
